New Age Group Changes Coming to Youth Soccer in Fall 2026
Starting in fall 2026, youth soccer age groups across the country will be determined by a new August 1 — July 31 birth date cutoff, replacing the current January 1 — December 31 calendar-year system. The change was jointly announced by US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO after U.S. Soccer removed its previous mandate requiring the calendar-year format.
What’s Changing
Under the current system, age groups are based on the calendar year a player was born. Beginning with the 2026-2027 season, age groups will instead follow a seasonal year running from August 1 to July 31. This is a return to the system used across American youth soccer prior to 2017.
Why the Change
The primary reason is to better align soccer teams with school-year peers. Under the January 1 cutoff, an estimated 2-5 players per team were “trapped” in age groups that didn’t match their school grade, creating challenges during key transition years like 8th grade and senior year. The August 1 cutoff reduces these mismatches for the largest number of players nationwide.
How It Affects Players
- Players born August through December will generally move down one age group and play with younger peers than they do today.
- Players born January through July will generally move up one age group and play with older peers.
Most players will not skip or repeat a year of competition — they simply shift into a new grouping that better reflects their school grade.
